Designing For Year Twelve

Living Proper believes home is the root of life. That belief shapes two questions we ask on every project. How will this room feel the day you walk into it? And how will it feel twelve years from now? We design for both, and we believe the answers belong together.

Beautiful Now

The present is where life is actually lived, so the present deserves real beauty. The morning light across the kitchen. A chair placed exactly where you will want to sit with your coffee. A color that makes an ordinary Tuesday feel a little more like yours. These are not details we save for later. They are the reason the work matters today.

Every choice we make for the present has a purpose. A room is arranged around how you move through it now: where you drop your keys, where the children do homework, where the conversation naturally gathers after dinner. Beauty and purpose are designed together, from the first day, so the home works for the life you are living right now.

And For Year Twelve

The first day in a finished home is a wonderful one. The linen is crisp, the floors have never met a dog, and every object sits exactly where it was placed. Then life begins, and that is where the design keeps going.

Year twelve is everything after. The children are taller. The reading chair has found its way to the window. The kitchen table carries a decade of homework, birthday dinners and late conversations. A well-designed home is ready for all of it, and grows more itself with every year.

We call this peaceful aging. It is the standard every decision has to meet.

Materials That Keep A Record

We reach for materials that improve with use. Solid wood, natural stone, unlacquered brass, wool, linen, leather. These materials record a life instead of resisting it. A walnut table with twelve years of dinners on it is a better table than the one that arrived on the truck. A brass handle that has darkened where hands meet it every morning tells you something true about the people who live there.

Proportion Before Pattern

Pattern and color carry a room's personality, and we love them. But the bones of a room are proportion, light and movement: how you enter, where the eye lands, how the afternoon sun crosses the floor. Get those right and a room can take on new fabric, new art and new chapters without losing itself. Proportion does not date.

Function, Built In

Function is one of the three words we hold for every Interiors project, alongside perspective and heirloom. It is the word that makes the other two structural. Storage lives where things are actually used. Lighting is layered for six in the morning and for nine at night. The chair beside the fire is the chair someone will actually sit in. A room that is beautiful and does not work is a room the family quietly stops using. A room that works becomes the one everyone ends up in.

Every piece chosen against every other

Our method is simple to say and slow to do. Each piece is chosen against every other piece in the home, the way you would build something by hand, selecting each part to complement the one before it and the one after. A room assembled this way holds together as one considered whole. It can absorb a new sofa, a move across the country, or a growing family, because the thinking underneath it was never about a single season.

The compliment that matters

A home designed with care feels right the day you move in, and it keeps feeling right. Years later, you walk in after a long trip, set your keys down in the same place you always do, and the room still feels exactly like yours.

Beautiful today, and better with time. That is the home we design for.
